Prestigious honour recognises lifetime contribution to global dermatology
Prof Henry W. Lim MD, FAAD, President of the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) and a Past President of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), has been awarded the Academy’s prestigious Gold Medal.
The Gold Medal is the Academy’s highest honour and is presented on a highly selective basis to recognise outstanding and exceptional service to the specialty of dermatology. Prof Lim received the award on 26 March during the 2026 AAD Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado.
The award was made in recognition of his contributions to the science, teaching and clinical practice of cutaneous medicine and surgery, together with his leadership in advancing dermatology in the US and worldwide.
A global authority on photodermatology and vitiligo, Prof Lim has played a pivotal role in the advancement of this treatment approach, together with photoprotection, and in improving the understanding and treatment of pigmentary conditions, particularly for people with skin of colour. His work has helped shape modern approaches to both research and patient care in dermatology.
Prof Lim continues to play a key role in dermatology internationally as President of the ILDS. In this role, his influence spans education, policy and research, helping to elevate skin health as a global public health priority.
In 2025, under his leadership, the ILDS was instrumental in securing the adoption of the historic resolution, Skin Diseases as a Global Public Health Priority, at the 78th World Health Assembly. The resolution calls on member states, regulators, non-governmental organisations, donors and other stakeholders to work together to improve access to skin health services worldwide.
Commenting on the award, Susan C. Taylor, MD, FAAD, President of the American Academy of Dermatology, said:
“Throughout his career, Professor Lim has advanced the science and practice of dermatology, including through the clinical and laboratory research programme he established at Henry Ford Health in Detroit, which honoured him with the Fred W. Whitehouse, MD, Distinguished Career Award. His visionary leadership has also inspired countless dermatologists across the globe. His legacy is one of excellence, equity and enduring impact on dermatology worldwide, making him a worthy recipient of this prestigious award.”
