Dr. Freeman MD PhD FAAD is Director of Global Health Dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. She has worked to improve healthcare, especially those affected by HIV, in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and southeast Asia since 2003. She has collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) since 2011, to establish guidelines for the treatment of HIV-associated skin conditions in resource-limited settings.
She is founding Chair of GLODERM, the International Alliance for Global Health Dermatology. She is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)'s Ad Hoc Task Force on COVID-19 and is the Principal Investigator of the International Dermatology COVID-19 Registry, which is a collaboration between the AAD and the International League of Dermatologic Societies (ILDS). She serves as an external advisor to the ILDS to the World Health Organization.
In addition, she has won a Presidential Citation and a Patient Care Hero Award from the AAD. She is Section Editor for the British Journal of Dermatology's new section on Global Health & Equity. She has authored over 50 publications, including in the New England Journal of Medicine and in Nature, and her work has been featured in the lay press in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and NPR, among others.
