Meet the Board: Jerry Shapiro

Perelman Department of Dermatology, New York University School of Medicine. I have been a Board Member of the ILDS since 2011 when Vancouver was voted to host the World Congress of Dermatology in 2015. I was President of that memorable meeting. The preparation for that meeting from the bidding process to the actual meeting allowed me to meet and greet so many dermatologists worldwide. The friends I have made during this whole process and continue to make has been a priceless experience. As a Board Member, I have served on various committees including the World Congress Committee for four years and then the Awards Committee for another four years. The accomplishments of those who were chosen to receive awards have been so notable and have made me so aware and appreciate the caliber of kindness that many dermatologists have given to their own societies. My family were immigrants to Canada from what is now known as Belarus. They were Holocaust survivors and instilled the importance of education to all their three children. My sister was born in Germany, brother in Israel and I in Canada. We were told that an education was something no one could take away from us and so we studied to excel in whatever we wanted to do. I graduated from McGill University with an honors degree in Cell and Molecular Biology, then went into McGill Medical School.  I went to Vancouver, British Columbia to attend my dermatology residency at the University of British Columbia. I spent over 25 years in Vancouver firstly, running a general dermatology practice then secondly, joined the university to specialize just in hair disorders. I started the first one to three year integrated medical and surgical hair fellowship in the world and have trained over 29 trainees from 4 continents. I am most known for my expertise in hair disorders and have written five books in three languages on trichologic medicine. I left Vancouver to become a full-time Professor of Dermatology at New York University in Manhattan right after my Presidency of the World Congress of Dermatology Vancouver 2015. The ILDS has shown me the greater needs in dermatology in places such as the sub-Saharan African continent and other parts of the world. It has instilled in me a global conscience within dermatology that I will carry on and teach to my residents and future fellows. I am so honored to have been a member of the board of this illustrious society which is one of the oldest and the largest of all dermatologic societies.   Jerry Shapiro, MD, FAAD
