Meet the Board: Kenji Kabashima

I graduated from Kyoto University in 1996. During my university days, I travelled to more than 30 countries as a backpacker. I was trained in Medicine/Dermatology at the United States Naval Hospital in Yokosuka Japan, Kyoto University Hospital, and University of Washington Medical Center. I started research on lipid mediators in immunology at Kyoto University, which led to a PhD (under Prof. Shuh Narumiya). Then I studied at the Department of Dermatology, Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine (Prof. Yoshiki Miyachi), UCSF (Prof. Jason Cyster), and University of Occupational and Environmental Health (Prof. Yoshiki Tokura). Currently, I am a chair/professor at the Department of Dermatology, Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan, and a principal investigator at the Skin Research Institute in Singapore (SRIS)/Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN), and a senior consultant at the National Skin Centre in Singapore. I have contributed to the dermatology fields as editorial board members of journals (J Allergy Clin Immunol, J Invest Dermatol, Br J Dermatol, Exp Dermatol, J Dermatol Sci, J Dermatol, Sci Rep, Int Immunol etc), program committees (International Investigative Dermatology), secretary-general (the JSID-Asia-Oceania-Forum and International Workshop on Langerhans cells). I am currently a board director of the International Societies for Investigative Dermatology (ISID), Japanese Dermatological Association, Japanese Society for Investigative Dermatology, and International Eczema Council. This program aims to provide knowledge in basic sciences, clinical dermatology and advanced technology in diagnostic approaches and management of skin disease to junior doctors/dermatologists. Up to 2019, there have been 36 batches, more than 900 graduated doctors from 34 countries. My main academic interests include the mechanism of inflammatory skin diseases (atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and psoriasis) and my hobbies are jogging (marathon, sub 3 hr), trail running (Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc 170 km), climbing, and travelling all over the world. I have been a Board Member of the ILDS since 2015, I have served on the Scientific Programme and Awards Committees. I am honored to have been able to be a part of this society.   Kenjji Kabashima
