Definitions pertaining to displaced individuals
There are several terms to describe displaced individuals and populations, including refugee,2,3 IDP,4 person seeking asylum (asylum seeker, asylee),5 and migrant2 (Table 1). The term refugee is a legal definition and has implications pertaining to protection under international law. The terms refugee and migrant are not synonymous, although migrants may still need humanitarian assistance.2,6
