In partnership with
Central South University (CSU) was selected as the academic host of The Lancet Commission on Skin Health in recognition of its long-standing leadership in dermatology and its strategic position to inform a global, transition-focused agenda for skin health.
The Commission at CSU is led by the team at Xiangya School of Medicine, whose dermatology discipline is regarded as a national leader in clinical care, research, and education.
Xiangya School of Medicine has developed particular strengths in skin tumours, psoriasis, facial disfiguring dermatoses, allergic skin diseases, and ageing and hair regeneration, forming an integrated ecosystem that connects clinical practice, education, research, and translational innovation in skin health.
The choice of host also reflects the Commission's central focus: the shifting global burden of skin disease from infectious to non-infectious conditions, including inflammatory skin diseases and skin cancers. Xiangya's clinical reach, research infrastructure, and data resources position the institution to lead analysis of historical trends, underlying causes, and response strategies on a global scale.
Hosting responsibilities of CSU
Hosting responsibilities are anchored by Professor Xiang Chen, co-chair of the Commission alongside Professor Esther E. Freeman (Harvard Medical School) and Professor Sinéad M. Langan (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine). Under Professor Chen's leadership, the team will coordinate the Commission's work, including the development of national-level policy toolkits, a "Skin Health Scorecard," and pilot programmes designed to advance equitable access to skin health care worldwide.
