International Dermatovenerology Alliance Against Trafficking (IDAAT)

Mission Statement: To develop resources and build capacity for the global medical community to provide timely support and advocacy for victims and survivors of human trafficking and exploitation.

Key Aims/objectives:
  1. Grow an international, multidisciplinary network of experts to foster education, research questions, implementation plans and advocacy strategy.
  2. Build an international repository of signs alerting clinicians to potential victims - recording regional variations
  3. Develop resources to support capacity strengthening/training of dermatologists to recognize and care for victims and survivors.

Background Information

The International Dermato-Venereology Alliance Against Trafficking is a coalition of physicians and advocates around the world, founded by Dr. Shadi Kourosh, Dr. Claire Fuller, and Dr. Valeska Padovese to bridge research and advocacy initiatives in the US and Europe to assist patients affected by human trafficking and to expand the network of experts and programs around the world.

This group collaborates and is informed by interdisciplinary experts from the law and policy communities including Isotta Rossoni of UN Women (UN organization dedicated to gender equality, and the empowerment of women) and Professor Laura Lederer of the Georgetown Law Center and advisor to US government on human trafficking.

Our First Initiative

The International Registry of the Skin Signs of Trafficking: where physicians, other members of the healthcare team, stakeholders and other arenas such as policy and government that intersect with human trafficking can log anonymous cases of the skin signs of trafficking that they have seen. This Registry will allow us to gather data around this issue specific to each region of the world.

  • Webinars: We will be hosting a webinar in the coming year. This webinar will provide an update on the intersection of human trafficking and the healthcare system. It will also discuss relevant signs and skills that can help health workers to identify and intervene in a timely fashion for patients.
